The Paradox of Subtlety—When Kundalini Comes Like a “Thief in the Night” Part II

fullsizeoutput_7a0

There is an aspect of the awakening Kundalini (the subtle current of life force in the spine) that is anciently familiar. It imparts a sense of wonderment that a sensation so close and intimate could have remained seemingly elusive for so long!

Here is my thinking about this: for years I sat in meditation practice with intention to connect with Kundalini, with the fine currents in the spine. The connection did not come with a “Big Bang.” Rather, it came more like a “Thief in the night.”

It is now somewhat baffling to me that it took so long to make this connection, considering how very close and accessible the subtle vibrations have always been! I believe that, perhaps, I did not give due importance to simply feeling into the overall sensation of the body…in the moment…and then going slightly deeper…and then deeper again.

At a certain point while simply noticing fine sensations, my attention was drawn to extremely fine forces at play in what seemed to be in the spine…a push/pull/play of subtlety!

Again, to me, it seems to be a grand paradox that a vibration so intimate and accessible could remain elusive for such a long time! Another way that I think about this mystery is that, metaphorically, I was walking in “lock-step” with a certain drum-beat that aligned with the vibratory realms of the world and all its drama and distractions.

All the while, beneath the din and turbulence of the worldly drumbeat, there was/is another drumbeat that is in resonance with the heart…so very close! It is not that this subtle vibration was less accessible or more difficult to connect with. Rather, for me, I believe it was just that it did not occur to me to simply feel deeply into subtle sensations!

Is that all? In looking back, it seems that, even with all the meditation practice and spiritual “seeking,” the momentum of my routine, day-to-day state of mind, created a resonance of being that did not take the time or bother to recognize the underlying vibration/resonance just below the busy-ness of my spiritual seeking!

This deep and wide “underlying vibration” was always there, readily accessible, because I now recognize its “on-the -surface,” entryway “signature” in the familiar sensations that I had not given much attention to: the gut feelings, of giddiness, of nostalgia, etc.

Another important point to consider: in order to “shake” me out of the patterns of my day-to-day way of thinking and being, in my estimation I believe I needed something that was strong enough to shift the resonance and pattern of my limited perspective of feeling and being. I needed a “pattern disrupt.”

Medicine Song, Dance of Life Force in the Body, Part V

So many layers/dimensions of sensations! “Music of the Spheres” seems to best describe (at least for me) the infinite complexities/subtleties of the Divine Dance in our bodies.

Feel into the flow of the underlying “Hum” of the body, of which the body, Earth, Cosmos seems to percolate up from, expressing as finest rays, like ethereal violin strings vibrating Cosmic music, sometimes beautiful and sometimes wild/chaotic!

When feeling into the subtle overall sensations of the body, the mind is drawn deeply into the central core of what feels like the area of the physical spine…and the awareness of these delicate sensations have a way of moving/expanding the energy/life force…that then creates a kind of “ants in the pants,” giddy feeling pulsing/dancing through the body… contorting, shaking, teeth clenching, etc…all a delicious dance of what is released from the central core of the body!

Tuning into, following the “giddy feeling” that builds up in the body allows the mind to latch onto, focus upon the more subtle waves of sensations that move deeply in the energetic field of the spine. Please note that I use the term “giddy feelings” because that is a feeling that most people can relate to…it is familiar. I also want to convey here that this particular feeling can be an entry-point to connect with the finer and more delicate sensations of what vibrates side-by-side and just underneath the denser and more familiar giddy feeling. Those feelings/sensations are not as familiar…

Medicine Song – Dance of Life Force in the Body, Part III

The sensing of fine and subtle vibrations moving through the the body (and especially the spine) imparts an experience of immense sweetness…like a kind of delicious nectar moving through every cell of the body!

Again, as mentioned previously, there is no difficulty in connecting/feeling into this blissful vibration. In my experience, when first connecting deeply with the subtle vibration, I was amazed at the infinitely thin layer of separation I created through my own resistance to feeling deeply…in not considering the simple invitation to follow the trail of feelings to deeper and finer levels of subtlety.

I was also amazed at how many years (and perhaps lifetimes) I struggled in meditation to connect with what was, ironically, so very close! The “problem” was not in meditation technique or in any lack of trying, but in not truly “getting,” understanding the import of feeling into subtle sensations…which is so very accessible to anyone!

Another important aspect of feeling into subtle sensations is in noticing/acknowledging of the buildup of the energy in the areas where the sensations are tuned into. It seems that wherever the sensations are focused upon, there is an expansion of the energy…creating energetic currents moving through the body/spine.

You might then notice how the body may adjust in “micromovements.” Twisting, coiling, contorting, etc., as a way to manage the higher voltage of life force in the body.

Dance of Micromovements, Elixir of Bliss Part II

It is easy enough to feel, while sitting still, the underlying vibration of the body. At the same time, because this vibration is so familiar to us, we may not be inclined to explore deeper into the subtlety that is just below the surface…because of the mind’s natural inclination to remain in the default habitual patterns of what it has grown used to.

The mind is easily hemmed in by the day-to-day, familiar patterns and so it may put up resistance to, or not consider the possibilities of exploring the subtle sensations that can be apprehended as delicate waves and eddies of fine vibrations…like a deep underground hum.

Feel deeply into the core of the overall sensation felt in the body. Breathe into it, observe, be with that very fine, subtle “humming” sensation. You may find that the body naturally adjusts in fine micromovements as a way for it to accommodate the flow of what moves through…and what moves through is felt as a coiling, pulsating radiation, so very subtle and sometimes “thread-like.”

What is meant here is that when connecting, feeling into subtle sensations, the body has a way of “squeezing” the energy, whether in the spine or elsewhere. This squeezing, combined with the feelings of coiling energies creates the experience of exquisitely fine/thin strands of energies that feel “thread-like”…and like a fly-fisherman/woman casting his/her lines out into the lake/river, these vibratory strands can be cast far out into the wide energetic space surrounding the body!

Tuning into the Subtlety of Sensations, Part I

The mind easily recognizes familiar objects (patterns) in its environment, all the things it has come to “know.” However, it can also easily fall into habitual/addictive patterns of thinking and doing, ones not necessarily beneficial to itself.

Mind can be thought of as a pattern generator and pattern recognizer. Understand that different patterns of behavior and thinking can just as easily be created, ones that are more in alignment with Higher Self.

By observing/noticing the mind (as in meditation), it is fairly easy to “see” or understand that the mind has layers upon layers of “noticing.” There is the superficial noticing of the environment and things in it, including our bodies. There is the noticing of thinking, of desires, feelings, likes/dislikes, etc. There is also the noticing of our sense of self, of our “I-ness,” the one who experiences.

Along with this type of superficial observing/noticing (which is easily taken for granted), there can also be a noticing of circumstances in our lives that seem to be out of our control or understanding, oftentimes in the areas of relationships, health, finances. It could seem like there are forces at work below the radar of our knowing that create havoc in our lives.

For these unseen and “dark” forces, we think of as being part of our “unconscious” or “subconscious.” We are able to observe or notice these forces through the effects that they have in our lives. Is it possible to observe these forces directly, to bring them into the light of the conscious?

Just below the superficial noticing of our environment, body, thoughts/feelings and sense of self, when we direct our attention inwardly to the underlying sensations and feelings, there is a noticing of the overall vibration. And just below this vibration, when one is fairly relaxed and quiet, there can be felt a subtle “feel good” feeling/sensation (akin to light giddiness)…and observed/felt underneath this are sensations that seem to initiate coiling/twisting/squeezing reverberations that express in the spine and body through “micro movements.”

This is a very different kind of relationship that can be experienced with our sense of self, with our life force…an awareness that is quite different from what we’ve grown familiar with.

Feeling into the subtleties of vibrations/sensations, as felt deeply in the body, is a practice we may not have truly understood, even through all the meditation and somatic exercises we’ve engaged in.

There is a simplicity in just feeling deeper and deeper into body sensations…and yet the power and beauty of this way of being with life energy is missed because of some mechanism of mind that has a way of short-circuiting our noticing what is just below the threshold of what we’ve come to consider “normal” and “familiar.”

It is the finest of barriers, because the body is rife with sensations, both obvious and subtle. By the mere tuning into subtle sensations and following deeper and deeper into the body and spine, an opening is created in our understanding and knowingness that…FINALLY… allows us to explore vibrations outside the range of what we’ve been accustomed to.

This simple allowing of ourselves to just feel deeply (below the obvious superficial sensations) is monumental as it represents a vastly different relationship with our life force, one that is not fenced in by the narrow spectrum of experience that had become our default pattern of existence.

Kundalini Dance of Subtlety, Part I

DSCF0564

The “fireworks” of the “Kundalini Awakening” experience, of incredible euphoria, intense kriyas (autonomic/spontaneous body movements), overwhelming sense of the breakdown/dissolution of ego along with all its accompanying pains and fears, etc., seems to—understandably–get more notice and interest in any discussion about Kundalini.

However, I can imagine that many of you may have also experienced the subtleties of Her sublime “dance” in our bodies and psyches…the exquisite micro-movements of the divine current!

The fireworks of Kundalini euphoria are amazing/wonderful when She wishes to dance wildly in our bodies, but I would venture to say that in Her subtlety, Her presence is just as powerful, if not more so…delicious reverberations that draws the awareness deeply within…echoing on and on!

Mind, body, breath, bliss…it all balances delicately as on the tip of a needle! The body then has an innate knowing of how to maintain and expand the current of Kundalini. It feels like liquid light, nectar that can be pushed, pulled, squeezed through the spine, body and limbs.

And of course, the connection can be lost for awhile through the million distractions that vie for our attention through the day. But just as easily as it can be lost, the connection can be resumed again. It is just behind all sensations. It’s just a matter of allowing ourselves to feel and acknowledge Her presence in subtlety!

I seek to connect with those who, like me, feel they have been “charged” to hold and ground the Bliss Resonance for Mother Earth. Please contact me if you’d like to experience the ecstatic current in the spine. It is a free session that will be of great benefit for you whether we decide to work together or not.
