Surrendering to the Cosmic Dance, Part XI

The overall sensation of the body, when followed to its subtle reverberation in the spine, is the Life Force, the awakening Kundalini.

I find that there is an interesting paradox when it comes to Kundalini, especially in terms of its connection with “subtle” sensations. What I mean by this is that it confounds the mind that sensations so subtle can have such strong effect on the body, mind and psyche!

To me, the paradox of Kundalini is the mystery of how such power, beauty and bliss can be “squeezed” through what seems to be a microscopically thin “thread” of sensation vibrating in the spine!

When Kundalini is active in the body, the effects are hardly subtle. Initially, the body may writhe and shake uncontrollably, as the nervous system is not yet able to accommodate the “voltage” of what flows through. As the body and nervous system grow in capacity and strength, the expression of Kundalini through the body becomes more graceful and dance-like.

In this “dance” with Kundalini, the mind is not so active but rather in neutral, observation mode. The sensitivity and attunement with the underlying vibration of Kundalini is at the fore of awareness. The mind is either in the state of “no-thought” or in observer mode that dispassionately watches the coming and going of thoughts, as from a distance.

The experience of “no-thought” is not a mentally “blank” state but rather a most delicate attunement with the feeling state of the “Bliss Resonance.” The Bliss Resonance is the underlying vibration, the overall sensation, the “resonance” of all that you feel in the moment.

It is the delicate sensation of Bliss that begins to percolate up into your experience the more you simply allow yourselves to feel the overall sensation of the moment.

Initially the feeling may be a pleasant “feel-good” sensation that is gently uplifting. It is important to understand and acknowledge the significance of this initial point of connection. The subtlety of the experience represents an entry point that allows you to go deeper and deeper into the Bliss Resonance.

Although the initial experience may be subtle, it is in the subtlety of vibration wherein lies deeper and deeper connection and attunement with the Bliss Resonance!

Focusing the Mind for Deeper Meditation, Part IX

In these blog posts, “Focusing the Mind for Deeper Meditation,” I speak often of “subtle currents” and feeling deeper and deeper into “subtle sensations.” My intention here is to share some things that I did not fully understand or “get” in my years of meditation practice and that prevented me from connecting with the exquisitely fine “currents” in the central core of the spine that are now so obviously apparent.

What does it mean to feel into subtle sensations, subtle currents? This is not a difficult concept to understand or to viscerally experience. An example of this approach is this: clap your hands loudly three times and then place them on your laps, palms up. Feel into the vibrations/sensations. Continue feeling as the sensations get softer and more “subtle.”

Take note of how you can track these subtle sensations for long periods of time, much longer than you would normally ever consider.

It is important to acknowledge to yourself that you have the ability to feel deeply…to feel into subtlety. Now, the following point is important to “get.” As you feel into subtle vibrations/sensations, you may find inner resistance of the mind. It wants to do what it is habitually familiar with doing…engaging with thoughts, desires, memories, etc.

So, although you may know that you have the ability to connect with subtle sensations, the mind may resist with thoughts of “So what? What’s the big deal with subtle sensations?”

Here is the big deal with subtle sensations: As you feel deeply into fine vibrations and sensations, you want to take notice and acknowledge those fleeting moments (flashes really) when the mind is not moving…when the mind is in the state of “no-thought.”

While tracking and feeling into subtle sensations, you may also notice how the mind continues “firing off,” engaging in thoughts…but you may also notice the thinking mind experienced as though from a distance…and with occasional flashes of “no-thought.” Just sensation!

These “flashes” are important to notice and acknowledge, even if at first they do not seem like a big deal. It is a huge deal, because these fleeting moments of “no-thought” that flash on and off through periods of meditation will ultimately reveal/impart the underlying “Hum” of the body that is connected with the Bliss Resonance!

The Paradox of Subtlety—When Kundalini Comes Like “A Thief in the Night” Part I

DSCF0583

During the fleeting moments of “no-thought,” when the experience of all sensations/vibrations felt in the moment resolves in the mind to the primal “Hum” of the body, a visceral connection is made with the awakening Divine Current, the Life Force….Kundalini!

This is not necessarily a “Big Bang,” “Big Wow!” kind of experience. At least not at first. It may come as a gentle whisper, a quiet rumbling, like a beautiful song being played far off in the distance.

It is very clear, however, that in this experience, you have connected with and created a very different relationship and perspective with your Life Force and sense of Self. There can also be a major shift in your spiritual world view. You will see your belief system in a different light…and you may very well see some “systems” fall away from your life.

For me, as profoundly helpful and inspiring my spiritual beliefs and practices were to me in the beginning and for many years thereafter, at a certain point they began to have less meaning for me. As my perspective and relationship with my body, mind and life force began shifting to one that was more and more on a level of subtle sensations, the philosophies, stories, forms and practices of my spiritual world view began to fall away. My relationship/attunement with Spirit seemed to move towards a very different “resonance.”

The experience may come like “a thief in the night,” so very gently, unobtrusively…and yet the “reverberations” and “echoes” of this subtle vibration can have profound impact in your life!

It is such a paradox that a vibration (Kundalini) so subtle can “shake” things up to such a degree! To me it seemed like every little dark nook and cranny of my life had to surface and “see-the-light-of-day” so to speak.

Looking back at my years of sickness and dealing with so many of my previously unseen shadows, it seems fairly apparent to me now that my body, mind and psyche were not in sync with the subtle, yet fast-moving (like quicksilver), primal “hum” of the awakening Kundalini.

The process seems to go on and on…and on. Sometimes it feels like living with a giant motor that, through resonance, is bringing the “slow” motor of my body/mind/psyche “up-to-speed.”

Connecting With the Bliss Resonance, Part VIII

Alchemy of Bliss

Alchemy of Bliss

Fleeting moments of “no-thought” during periods of meditation are very different from “absent-mindedness.” When deeply “tuned” into the very delicate sensations moving through the body, the mind naturally slows down as the feeling state comes to the fore.

In absent-mindedness there is no stable or grounded center of conscious awareness. The consciousness remains disconnected from the vibration of “center,” disconnected from the Bliss Resonance. An absent mind is easily caught in the “currents” of habitual patterns of thinking and acting.

Now, when feeling deeply into fine sensations they seem to have a way of “gripping” or “squeezing” the mind into focus…into one-pointedness! The mind/awareness becomes rooted to the sensation of “Center,” the experience of “Being.” Such moments may be accompanied by “flashes” of “no-thought” and intimations of the Bliss Resonance.

The “Bliss Resonance,” as best as I can describe it, is a deeply subtle sensation of the overall vibration of the body that imparts an energetic uplift of body/mind/psyche. Also, because the sensation is innately blissful, the mind is automatically drawn inwards, as though caught or embraced by a “squeezing” or “contorting” energy, as felt in the spine and rest of the body.

The “uplift” of vibration also has an affect of lifting and straightening the spine, lifting the eyes, automatically and spontaneously. The Bliss Resonance is like a live wire in the body that “electrifies” the system!
