[Continued from Part V] Think of it in this way: when first learning to dance, it can be helpful to learn some dance moves, but after the initial “getting familiar” period of learning, it is not satisfying to remain in the superficial levels of technique. Going deeper and deeper into the subtleties of movement and rhythm, technique can be released and one can surrender to the natural power and splendor of how life force wishes to dance in the body.
Similarly, meditation technique is helpful in creating the setting for connecting with the subtleties of the life force, but technique does not necessarily lead to a deeper and deeper release/surrender to the flow of the underlying current.
The inner prompts of life force moving through the body and spinal centers may guide/suggest a very different posture, movement of body and breath, position of eyes, focus of attention, etc. To rigidly adhere to meditation technique during such times can work against the very intention of your meditation practice.
In many instances, I believe the all-important “missing ingredient” of meditation practice is the simple feeling deeper and deeper into the overall sensation of the body, the resonance of all sensations felt as one vibration, one “Hum” of Being.
With this particular approach, the mind maintains a fairly easy focus/concentration…as the very subtlety of the underlying “Hum” of the body and spinal centers have an innately blissful feel…and bliss is very easy to maintain one-pointed attention on!
When feeling into the overall sensation of the body, tune into the underlying subtlety of vibration. Notice the shift in consciousness (however slight) as the mind continues to follow/connect deeper and deeper with the subtle waves and pulsations of the underlying “Hum” of the body.
Meditation techniques certainly help in creating the “setting” in which the fine underlying sensations/vibrations can be tuned into, but going deeper and deeper into the subtle realms is not something—I believe—meditation technique of itself is capable of doing.
Here is what I believe happens: once a deep connection with the subtle/ethereal vibrations are viscerally connected with, then meditation technique can be very helpful to go even deeper.
The great irony here is that most meditators begin with the assumption that meditation technique will—in a “step-by-step” fashion—connect them with the Divine Realms. In all my years of meditation practice in the ashram, I had many wonderful spiritual experiences, but the connection with the exquisitely fine Bliss Resonance remained elusive. Neither did I see evidence of that connection with the majority of the Monks that I lived with.
Meditation technique, when focused upon and held tightly to in “step-by-step” process, can create a barrier—however slight—that separates the meditator from the very fine nuances of how the Life Force (Spirit) in the body wishes to move/dance.
The practice of meditation technique does not necessarily lead to a wider energetic space within. The inner “resistance” created by strong attachments to beliefs and assumptions regarding meditation and spirituality builds a kind of force field or “wall” of noise that prevents us from hearing/feeling the subtle reverberations that move just below the surface of our familiar state of being.
Any thought, prayer, or feeling, when repeated often enough—and with deep feeling—can ultimately be felt going on and on, by themselves through the momentum created by rhythm and repetition. In the mindful experience of prayers and subtle sensations going automatically, in the background of the mind, an opening to finer and deeper realms of subtlety is created.
There is then a sense of touching into, tuning into a deep underground resonance that has the ongoing prayer and feeling embedded into it. Understand what is being offered here: a way for prayers and corresponding feelings/sensations to expand deep into the bedrock Hum of Creation!
In the beginning this need only be an initial recognition of how the inner resonance (felt as the overall sensation of the body) naturally draws the mind’s focus within…providing an easy entryway to finer and finer realms of subtlety.
Sometimes the body and mind need to be warmed-up in order to get into the flow of creativity, into the flow of the ingoing trance states. The use of rhythm and repetition can be of great help. For instance, the repetition of certain words, like “Divine,Divine, Divine, Divine….etc.” while rhythmically and gently moving the body (dance-like) can be used to quickly and easily enter the first stages of meditative trance and the flow of creativity…and with the Bliss Resonance.
The use of rhythm and repetition is a way to “prime-the-pump” of the mind to connect with the subtle sensations of the Life Force…and this connection is a delicate balancing act of tuning into what feels like an underlying resonance of all sensations together…felt as one overall sensation…one Hum.
This initial connection need not be a “Big Wow, knock your socks off” kind of transformative experience. The important point here is to feel the overall vibration/sensation of the body…and to notice the inward focusing shifts of the mind as it notices subtlety of sensations (however slight).
This initial connection with subtlety need only be a simple noticing of the inward flowing of the mind…as opposed to the usual and habitual outward flowing mind. Now, the “simple noticing of the inward flowing mind” creates a reference point, an inner acknowledgment that gives the mind a knowingness in how to go deeper and deeper into the subtle currents of the body, especially in the spinal currents.
So many layers/dimensions of sensations! “Music of the Spheres” seems to best describe (at least for me) the infinite complexities/subtleties of the Divine Dance in our bodies.
Feel into the flow of the underlying “Hum” of the body, of which the body, Earth, Cosmos seems to percolate up from, expressing as finest rays, like ethereal violin strings vibrating Cosmic music, sometimes beautiful and sometimes wild/chaotic!
When feeling into the subtle overall sensations of the body, the mind is drawn deeply into the central core of what feels like the area of the physical spine…and the awareness of these delicate sensations have a way of moving/expanding the energy/life force…that then creates a kind of “ants in the pants,” giddy feeling pulsing/dancing through the body… contorting, shaking, teeth clenching, etc…all a delicious dance of what is released from the central core of the body!
Tuning into, following the “giddy feeling” that builds up in the body allows the mind to latch onto, focus upon the more subtle waves of sensations that move deeply in the energetic field of the spine. Please note that I use the term “giddy feelings” because that is a feeling that most people can relate to…it is familiar. I also want to convey here that this particular feeling can be an entry-point to connect with the finer and more delicate sensations of what vibrates side-by-side and just underneath the denser and more familiar giddy feeling. Those feelings/sensations are not as familiar…
It is easy enough to feel, while sitting still, the underlying vibration of the body. At the same time, because this vibration is so familiar to us, we may not be inclined to explore deeper into the subtlety that is just below the surface…because of the mind’s natural inclination to remain in the default habitual patterns of what it has grown used to.
The mind is easily hemmed in by the day-to-day, familiar patterns and so it may put up resistance to, or not consider the possibilities of exploring the subtle sensations that can be apprehended as delicate waves and eddies of fine vibrations…like a deep underground hum.
Feel deeply into the core of the overall sensation felt in the body. Breathe into it, observe, be with that very fine, subtle “humming” sensation. You may find that the body naturally adjusts in fine micromovements as a way for it to accommodate the flow of what moves through…and what moves through is felt as a coiling, pulsating radiation, so very subtle and sometimes “thread-like.”
What is meant here is that when connecting, feeling into subtle sensations, the body has a way of “squeezing” the energy, whether in the spine or elsewhere. This squeezing, combined with the feelings of coiling energies creates the experience of exquisitely fine/thin strands of energies that feel “thread-like”…and like a fly-fisherman/woman casting his/her lines out into the lake/river, these vibratory strands can be cast far out into the wide energetic space surrounding the body!
One of the purposes of “Accessing Your Higher Self” blog site is to share helpful ways to shift the relationship we have with “life force/energy” (our sense of self) to a much deeper and more expansive one that connects us with the subtleties of our Divine gifts…gifts we are meant to express and share with the world.
What does it mean to “connect with the subtleties of our Divine gifts?” It is a process of feeling deeper and deeper into the overall sensation/resonance of Being, allowing the mind to be absorbed into what feels like an underlying hum/vibration.
The intention to feel deeper and deeper into the “underlying hum” is a distilling of sensation to the finest, most subtle essence of Being.
As the awareness attunes itself deeper and deeper with this subtle “Hum,” the body/mind/psyche inevitably goes into a kind of swoon/contortion of overflowing energies, ecstatically blissful by nature.
This “overflowing” of energy happens as a result of mind that, as it “touches” or experiences subtle vibration, an expansion of mind and energy happens simultaneously, creating a “contortion” of the physical body.
