The visceral experience of the Bliss Resonance puts the mind and body into a kind of swoon, held by the “current” that moves deliciously in the spine!
This “current” is connected with by feeling into finer and finer sensations. As I’ve mentioned before, there is a paradoxical affect that occurs when feeling into the subtleties of sensations: at the same time a bliss response occurs in the spine!
The bliss response initially starts as a sensation that is small, like a “grain of sand” vibrating in the spine…and yet it has the power to draw the mind within. This subtle sensation intimates of something that is vast and mysterious…the “contortion” of the Bliss Resonance!
The mind that focuses upon the fine “grain-of-sand” of the Bliss Resonance gets drawn into what is like a current that gets stronger and stronger the deeper you go into the subtlety.
Hold to the “Divine Current!” You will come to experience the body as a conduit/lightning rod for the Divine to ground the Bliss Resonance into the vibratory space you inhabit!
There are many subtle sensations connected with the breath. For example, take a deep breath, exhale and keep the breath out until you begin to feel a slight discomfort. Breathe in deeply and feel the relaxation and relief that comes over the body.
Notice that the visceral experience of relaxation and relief can be followed deep into what may feel like the areas of the gut and spine. Understand that the whole purpose of this exercise is to connect you with finer and finer waves of sensations…which, through resonance, connects you with the underlying and primal Bliss Vibration!
As you begin to tune into and familiarize yourself with the inward focus on these subtle sensations, you may first notice gut feelings, intestinal sensations, perhaps similar to giddiness.
As you continue to deeply feel into these pulsating, shivering vibrations, they will guide you to what feels like an exquisitely fine “thread” of sensations vibrating deliciously in the centermost channel of the spine!
Regarding the feelings of “sweetness” mentioned in the previous post, I would like to elaborate further because it is, I believe, at the crux of the process of the awakening Life Force (Kundalini).
Of course, there is no “one-size-fits-all” process of what happens when Kundalini begins to awaken in individuals, but in my opinion, I believe there is a foundational vibration (of Kundalini) that imparts the Bliss response in the spine…which can manifest as “sweetness.”
As Kundalini begins to “awaken” in the spine, a refinement process takes place. For me, in the beginning this “refinement process” felt more like being worked on by jack hammer and wrecking ball! Hardly blissful or comfortable!
A lot of toxic and stuck energy in my body, mind and psyche had to be moved and expelled! Part of the “stuck” energy was my spiritual world view, which served me well for a number of years, but at a certain point got in the way through all the assumptions, expectations, beliefs and attachments regarding how things were “supposed” to work.
In a sense, I created a “hard shell” of protection around my world view, around all that was familiar and “safe” (which included my negative patterns of thoughts/behaviors as well).
Kundalini was like a great shaking that turned everything upside down, introducing me to a very different relationship and perspective with my sense of self and my Life Force.
It was/is a very wild ride! As well as paradoxical, non-linear, impossible to fully quantify or put into a step-by-step process!
Of course the mind likes to encapsulate, define and give meaning to things…and if I can “put in a nutshell” what the process of Kundalini is, I would describe it in this way: refine, purge, integrate…refine, purge, integrate…refine, purge, integrate…and on and on.
The periods of refining and purging are times when old and unhelpful structures of thoughts/behaviors are shifted and then released. The periods of integration allow for adjustment to the new and higher frequencies of being.
To me it seems that the “busy-ness” of mind, as well as its habitual patterns of thinking and relating to the world, makes it a little too easy to slip into mindless thinking and acting that keep us insulated from the finer vibrations and energies flowing so deliciously in the spine and rest of the body!
Our habitual patterns, over a period of many years (and perhaps a lifetime), become like a freight train that is not so easy to stop or change course.
However, it just takes repeated intentions of noticing sensations to finer and finer levels of subtlety in order to shift “tracks” of a mind that seems so intractable. A mind that is “locked” into a certain range of thinking and behaving may not want to consider exploring things outside what it has become accustomed to, that has no meaning or point of interest in terms of its familiar mindset.
The point is that the mind, through its “day-to-day-to-day” habit patterns has created the “spectrum” of how we think/feel/act…and like a train moving along familiar tracks, we get comfortable with what is predictable and “safe.”
The momentum over many years (and perhaps a lifetime) of feeling, thinking and acting within certain parameters, creates the thinnest of veils that prevents the mind from exploring sensations that are just below the “veneer” of the mind’s unwillingness to feel deeply.
In my experience, I believe I did not truly “get” (understand) the significance of simply feeling into the overall sensation of the body. This approach may sound too simple…and accordingly my mind resisted, would not allow placing so much attention on feelings!
Part of the “problem” for me was that my mind was, for years, going down the “tracks” of a monastic lifestyle that included very high ideals of meditation practice and codes of behavior. Not that there is anything wrong with monastic lifestyle or having high ideals, etc.
It is my belief now that whenever the mind gets “caught” on any track of thinking/feeling/behaving, no matter how lofty the “tracks” may seem, if the mind ceases to consider or feel the wider energetic field beyond its narrow perspective, then this becomes a “problem.”
For me, when the monastic lifestyle “track” came crumbling down, it allowed me a visceral experience of wild and primal energies at work in my life. Learning to work with these chaotic and volatile energies required a relinquishment of belief systems around spirituality and concepts about enlightenment/satori/samadhi, Kundalini, the guru-disciple relationship, etc. etc.
I believe these were all helpful in the beginning, but at a certain point, when actually connecting with primal energies, it all goes down the drain! They all lose meaning.
When feeling into the overall sensation/resonance of the body, with the intention to focus upon subtle vibrations, you may begin to feel intimations of a vast and primal sensation. Initially it can be mere flashes of what feels like a deep underground “rumbling” or “reverberation.”
These “intimations” can bring up certain feelings. For me, they are quite oftentimes feelings of nostalgia and sensations of giddiness…all very subtle at first.
With the intention to go deeper into the subtlety, the mind and body begin to experience a most delicate balance point of focus…and by virtue of simply feeling into these fine vibrations, you may connect with certain unfamiliar sensations, including one that imparts an upliftment of feelings, the Bliss Resonance!
With deeper play, exploration and surrender to the Bliss Resonance, you will begin to experience how the body innately and spontaneously knows how to move and dance with the growing Bliss energy.
You will observe how the body will take up certain postures and “micro-movements” as ways to allow greater flow of what wants to move, express and expand in the body/mind/spirit.
The play of subtlety with the Bliss Resonance becomes more like a beautiful dance and unlike what we might have considered as meditation “practice.”
When viscerally connected with the fine energies of the life force, the Bliss Resonance, the thought of “meditation practice” no longer “fits” nor has the same meaning that it may once have had.
When connected with the fine energies of the life force, meditation “practice” becomes more aptly thought of as meditation “dance” or meditation “swoon”…or perhaps “dance of subtlety.”
The resonance of the body (its overall physical vibration), holds the mind in patterns that it has grown accustomed to. These familiar, habitual patterns become the day-to-day “reality” that—over time—becomes like an old window that we can no longer see beyond narrow constraints of the “house” that we’ve lived in for so long.
A body that is filled with toxins will reflect the vibration of illness in body and mind. If you wish to shift to a higher level of power and capacity, to attract the resources, knowledge and wisdom that make for a more fulfilling life, then the prime directive would be to change your frequency range to a finer resonance that is in tune with the wider and more powerful current (Life Force).
As you begin vibrating at a higher frequency, you also begin to shake up and release the “sediment” of heavy/dark energies…and this may feel like a “detox.” The body seems to require extra time to “catch up” with the higher vibrating frequencies of Spirit…and so it is important to keep the body in good condition (healthy, high vibration foods, exercise, etc.).
The body can also be thought of as a kind of battery and/or pump that is able to store and move energy. Another important capability of the body is that it can refine and distill energy…and with refined energy comes the birth of spiritual vision, connection with Divine purpose and the expression of the unique gifts you are meant to share on Planet Earth.
In the beginning it is enough to “capture” the fleeting moments, the “split seconds” of noticing the sensations of the underlying “hum” of the body. Also, because the sensations are so subtle, there can be a tendency to dismiss or discount them. However, by paying attention, by noticing and acknowledging the subtle “feel-good” sensations (if even for a fraction of a second), you might also come to feel its connection with the wider field or current that can be felt as the underlying “hum” of the body.
These fleeting, “flash-in-the-pan” moments of noticing subtle sensations is oftentimes coupled with split second periods of “no-thought”…as deep attention to subtle vibrations creates little gaps in thinking. This is significant insofar as this experience creates the inner acknowledgement that you have the capacity to consciously and intentionally feel into finer and finer vibrations.
Knowing that you have the capacity to tune into subtlety may not necessarily be a “big bang,” transformational experience of Divine Awakening. Paradoxically however, the experience is hugely significant because it represents a transformative shift in your relationship with Life Force and sense of Self. It signifies your entry point into the Divine Subtlety and connection with the Bliss Resonance!
What do I mean by “meditative swoon?” It is a visceral experience that occurs when the mind feels deeply into the overall sensation/vibration of the body. As the mind continues following subtle vibrations, at some point there arises in the awareness a “feel-good” sensation.
At first, this “feel-good” sensation is very subtle, but as you continue in your meditations to connect with subtlety, the uplifting feelings get stronger and more distinct.
The mind and body then go into a “swoon” as it “locks” into the fine and blissful vibrations that seem to bubble up from the depths of the spine. As you get more and more familiar with the the sensations involved when going into meditative swoon, you will learn to extend the duration of the experience. You will also learn how to follow the lead of the fine dynamics at play in the spine and body.
When connected with the “feel-good” sensation in the spine, notice how the body takes up and holds certain postures and focuses the mind upon fine sensations that feel as if a kind of taffy is being pulled to finer and finer strands of scintillating vibrations.
These fine “threads” of vibrations draws the body/mind/psyche into meditative swoon/trance, into the inward flowing current of Life Force, which then contorts the body into various positions while also activating it to move dance-like, in resonance with the river of the Bliss Vibration!
When feeling into the overall sensation of the body, tune into the underlying subtlety of vibration. Notice the shift in consciousness (however slight) as the mind continues to follow/connect deeper and deeper with the subtle waves and pulsations of the underlying “Hum” of the body.
Meditation techniques certainly help in creating the “setting” in which the fine underlying sensations/vibrations can be tuned into, but going deeper and deeper into the subtle realms is not something—I believe—meditation technique of itself is capable of doing.
Here is what I believe happens: once a deep connection with the subtle/ethereal vibrations are viscerally connected with, then meditation technique can be very helpful to go even deeper.
The great irony here is that most meditators begin with the assumption that meditation technique will—in a “step-by-step” fashion—connect them with the Divine Realms. In all my years of meditation practice in the ashram, I had many wonderful spiritual experiences, but the connection with the exquisitely fine Bliss Resonance remained elusive. Neither did I see evidence of that connection with the majority of the Monks that I lived with.
Meditation technique, when focused upon and held tightly to in “step-by-step” process, can create a barrier—however slight—that separates the meditator from the very fine nuances of how the Life Force (Spirit) in the body wishes to move/dance.
The practice of meditation technique does not necessarily lead to a wider energetic space within. The inner “resistance” created by strong attachments to beliefs and assumptions regarding meditation and spirituality builds a kind of force field or “wall” of noise that prevents us from hearing/feeling the subtle reverberations that move just below the surface of our familiar state of being.
As you continue to relax and feel into the subtle vibrations in the palms (that were started by clapping the hands together, see Part II), you might begin to feel the overall sensation of the body…and ultimately the Hum or Om Vibration. By tuning the mind inwardly on the subtle vibrations, it begins to apprehend its connection with the underlying Hum of all vibrations…felt as One Resonance!
The vocalized sound of Om is a representation of this “One Resonance.” Embedded in this resonance is a sweetness that can be tuned into while toning (or chanting) Om. The vocalizing of Om can be thought of as getting the motor of the body and especially the spinal currents running.
Just like in clapping the hands, the vibrations started in the vocal cords can be—through resonance—felt throughout the body, especially the nasal cavities, lower abdomen, heart area, spine, etc.
The sweetness of the Bliss vibration has a particular resonance that can be tuned into. Like tuning the guitar, or any instrument, the body/mind/psyche can be tuned to the Resonance of Bliss!
