Focusing the Mind for Deeper Meditation, Part VII

Turtle Medicine - Live in Peace Art by Bruce Manaka

Turtle Medicine – Live in Peace Art by Bruce Manaka

The overall sensation of the body during periods of meditation practice resolves to an awareness of an underlying vibration, a gentle “hum.” This is a feeling experience that has a way of focusing the mind to moments of one-pointed attention.

Perhaps a more accurate depiction is that the easily distracted and active mind is rendered silent as it is “gripped” by the inwardly felt resonance of the “Hum.” During these moments of one-pointed attention, of “no-thought,” there is only the visceral experience of the subtle currents of “Life Force.”

The mind/consciousness that is “caught” in the currents of Life Force (the awakening Kundalini), experiences a different perspective with its sense of self and the normally active and easily distracted mind. It is able to observe dispassionately the rising and falling of thoughts…with fleeting moments of “no-thoughts.”

In other words, it is able to observe the mind for what it is: an energetic vortex of energy connected with the body that in normal waking state is constantly “firing-off” thoughts, memories, desires, like/dislikes, etc. It is able to observe without attaching to them!

The mind that is held in the “current” of the underlying “Hum” of the body easily goes into meditative trance. Its perspective changes from outward focus to inward focus that locks into the ever-deepening sensations of subtle vibrations.

Although the process of connecting with the subtle currents of the inwardly flowing Life Force (Kundalini) is simple enough, it may seem like the most difficult thing to do…until you allow yourselves to simply feel what you feel in the moment…and then to go slightly deeper.

The going “slightly deeper” is important in that there is a subtle shift in the mind and body that takes place. There is a focusing affect that occurs, along with a bodily sensation. This is subtle and the mind may not want to pay attention to something so mundane and simple.

However, I believe everyone has the ability to notice this transition and my suggestion here is to hold intention to explore this seemingly uninteresting transition. The very intention and act of exploring nuances of vibration in the body allows an opening or entryway to deeper and deeper subtleties of the energetic field of the body.

The Paradox of Subtlety—When Kundalini Comes Like a “Thief in the Night” Part IX

Turtle Medicine by Bruce Manaka

Turtle Medicine, artwork by Bruce Manaka

The paradox of subtlety (of sensations) in the body, to me, is a grand mystery! It is a mystery how certain sensations in the spine/body, so subtle and seemingly insignificant, can be so powerfully activating when we allow ourselves to feel their fine reverberations!

I realize now that what was always accessible feeling-wise (subtle vibrations), I did not give much or any attention to. Even with all the years of meditation practice, with intention to go below the surface of the superficial, I did not truly “get” the significance of feeling into finer and finer sensations.

Here is what I believe happened that prevented me from connecting with the subtle vibrations. In my strong desire to meditate and to live the monastic life, my focus on meditation “practice” and living the monastic lifestyle created a protective shielding that insulated me from primal energies, of sex and wild, chaotic stirrings of the unconscious mind.

The paradox is that, for me, although the monastic lifestyle was able to provide structure and community to seek the Divine, at a certain point the “structure” was unable to accommodate the wild unraveling and unwinding of the awakening Life Force….Kundalini!

Think of it in this way: as you surely know, life and circumstances can at times get messy…really messy! With the awakening Kundalini, there seems to be an added component of “strangeness,” especially during times when body/mind/psyche are getting severely shaken.

During such times, the body can go through spontaneous contortions and gyrations as the energy builds up to a crescendo in the spine. It seems to me that the body lagged way behind in its capacity to process and manage the resonance of the high vibrations of Kundalini.

Leaving the ashram provided the initial “pattern disrupt,” shaking loose the structures and mind habits of how I approached meditation and spirituality in general.

I find it fascinating how the mind (my egoic mind) wants to make sense of its place in the world as well as to define and ascribe “meaning” to all things, including the wild ride of the awakening Kundalini.

Dreaming of Turtles

A reader, whom I will refer to as Tiffany, shared a “turtle” dream that she recently had. I’d like to share it here, with some of my own thoughts. Considering how many responses I’ve gotten from my post, “Turtle Energy – Ancient Origins” it would seem that many people are having turtle dreams.

Turtle Medicine

“I dreamt I was on a station bike in the back of a yard that presumes to be mine and a few feet ahead is like a vast water like the sea but it was of no waves.. as when I looked over I saw straight through to the bottom. It’s very clear and everything looked beautiful the colors it was like watching a magazine under water reef… but what stood out was a large turtle in a still motion with huge eyes beaming right at me that gave me creeps.. so while I was on this station bike, my 4year old old that I love so much was playing near the edge.. and I was telling him move away before he falls in as he cannot swim and he was provoking me as he did it even more putting his feet near the edge and grinning… so then I stay on the bike and started shouting for his dad who was somewhere but not seen to tell him come get Asher before he falls but he didn’t and I woke up..”

Thanks for sharing your dream Tiffany. Here’s the sense I get from it…and please understand that this is just my interpretation from what I get from the symbols and archetypes as they showed up in your dream.

To me the “backyard” represents the parts of yourself not seen by others…and it would make sense that the “vast water like the sea” is your inner life (emotions, feelings, fears, etc.).

You were able to see “straight through to the bottom” of the “vast water” which was “very clear and everything looked beautiful…” which seems to represent your infinite potential (for love, beauty, wisdom, etc.).

Your being on the “station bike” (stationary bike?) seems to represent that part of you that perhaps feels is doing a lot of work but not going anywhere (stationary). Your “child” that you “love so much” was “playing near the edge” represents the child within you that you want to protect from the depths of your infinite potential, as it is scary, too wide, too big, as represented by the “large turtle” with “huge eyes.”

Now your feelings are key here. You wrote “gave me creeps…” Was the feeling dark/forboding, menacing?

I know from my own dreams that when something gives me the “creeps,” there is usually an entity or menacing spirit-type of intrusion. However, when I have vast water dreams, to me it can oftentimes be scary in the sense of too big, wide, vast…never creepy.

If your feelings were “creepy” then it would be helpful to “clear” yourself of dirty or unclean energies, using whatever prayers/rituals that make sense to you, Call in your animal protectors, angelic guides, etc. Smudge yourself with sage, command any unclean, heavy or dark energies to be released to the light.

Anyway, hope this helps!

I seek to connect with those who, like me, feel they have been “charged” to hold and ground the Bliss Resonance for Mother Earth. Please contact me if you’d like to experience the ecstatic current in the spine. It is a free session that will be of great benefit for you whether we decide to work together or not. Turtle Medicine – Ancient Memories

Turtle Medicine - Live in Peace

Turtle Medicine transports us between dimensions, from waking to dreamtime awareness and back. It helps us to slow down our thoughts and the very frequency that keeps the earth drama in play. As you close your eyes and visualize Turtle Medicine, it is so easy to see the form of Turtle as the Earth Mother, swimming effortlessly through the vastness of space. Touch and feel the hard shell beneath your feet. Listen and feel on the inside as breath slows down and thoughts fall away. Your connection with the Earth can be felt as an ancient memory, a distant playing of song that can be heard in the farthest periphery of awareness. You ride upon the back of Turtle Medicine, through skies and ocean…through all dimensions!

As your breath slows down, gently and in the most natural way, you feel yourself expanding through all realms, until you know your Self as part of all things, including the dance of littleness and limitation that is so much a part of the earth drama. And yet, as you breathe with the breath of Turtle Medicine, and allow its song to wash over you like the warm rays of the Sun, you also know that the dream of littleness is for a short while, and that the Earth Mother is calling you to release the tight hold you have upon the nightmare.

Listen and feel! The breath relaxes and as you watch inhalation meeting exhalation, and exhalation meeting inhalation, the awareness deepens of itself as mind and body slow down, as the frequency of little self melts into the resonance of the Earth Mother. Upon the back of Turtle Medicine you ride, floating so easily, so quietly. Can you feel the hard shell, smooth and worn. When you touch the shell of Turtle you are connecting with the ancient memories of the Great Mystery!

Look into the shell that is beneath your feet. Something is reflecting back from the farthest galaxies of memory. Observe and receive…listen and feel. Turtle Medicine calls you to ride upon its back, to travel through places of light and shadow, pain and joy, enjoying the great dance of creation that unfolds within the openness of your heart! Enjoy and receive!

Turtle Energy – Ancient Origins

Had dreams about turtles. Dear Higher Self, what is the significance of these dream? They were trying to bite me!

Turtle energy is deeply connected with ancient Earth energies and is “biting” to get your attention. Consider what Turtle energy represents: ancient and long-lived, Turtle represents wisdom of ancient origin. The hard shell of Turtle houses the Earth energies, the powers that are timeless and steady. Turtle is expert in stillness and breathlessness. It goes at its own pace.

Turtle wants you to know that it is ok to slow down, to take time to meditate, to set aside for awhile the work you do in the world. Like Turtle, you go at your own pace. Turtle asks you to be patient. It “bites” you so that you might awaken to your own nature. Slow down and listen to the breath of Turtle. It is gentle and deep. Follow Turtle to its home in Mother Earth.

When Turtle energy comes to you in dreams, it does so to remind you to seek the depths of the creative ocean. You are not meant to remain on the surface, getting battered by waves of worry and grappling endlessly with the drama of survival. You have gifts beneath the hard shell of protection that encases your heart. Release your heart by listening to the ocean that Turtle swims in. Listen and receive…

You have been like Turtle that has been on its back, unable to free yourself from a self-created prison of limiting beliefs and narrow assumptions about unfortunate “circumstances.” And you even feared the tidal waves fast approaching that you believed would dash you on the hard rocks of a world that seems so harsh…and yet the waves come as a way to free you from the stranglehold of thoughts, to awaken you to the depths of the Creative Ocean where you belong…

The Ocean is rising not to destroy, but to remind…
