Connecting With the Bliss Resonance, Part III

I would like to elaborate a bit more on the approach of using music to connect with the Bliss Resonance, the subtle “feel good” sensations that move delicately in the spine and—through resonance—the rest of the body.

Have you noticed how skilled musicians, when they “lose” themselves in their playing, move so delicately and passionately with their instruments and with the music? For example, when observing a piano player “surrendered” in his/her playing, they will sway in rhythm and resonance with the music, as though in a swoon, deeply absorbed in the enjoyment of their “play.”

The approach that I would suggest to you while listening to music that touches you deeply is this: observe how your body naturally and intuitively wants to move in rhythm and harmony with the music.

Now, as you continue to feel into the music, take special notice of the very subtle sensations that are activating you to move in rhythm and resonance with the music.
This is an important point. As you go deeper in feeling with the music, you want to “latch” onto and “follow” the vibration/sensation that is creating the desire to move/sway/dance.

Tune into the finest nuance of this vibration! It creates the sensation that puts the body and mind into swoon! When you can apprehend the very delicate nature of this vibration, you will be able to follow the “current” deep into the spine!

Now, when you are able to connect with this subtle current while listening to music, you can also apply this approach when sitting in silence during your regular meditation periods…or while standing in line at the market, or while driving, etc. Get the point?

Listening to the Intuitive Voice, Part V

When feeling into the overall sensation of the body, tune into the underlying subtlety of vibration. Notice the shift in consciousness (however slight) as the mind continues to follow/connect deeper and deeper with the subtle waves and pulsations of the underlying “Hum” of the body.

Meditation techniques certainly help in creating the “setting” in which the fine underlying sensations/vibrations can be tuned into, but going deeper and deeper into the subtle realms is not something—I believe—meditation technique of itself is capable of doing.

Here is what I believe happens: once a deep connection with the subtle/ethereal vibrations are viscerally connected with, then meditation technique can be very helpful to go even deeper.

The great irony here is that most meditators begin with the assumption that meditation technique will—in a “step-by-step” fashion—connect them with the Divine Realms. In all my years of meditation practice in the ashram, I had many wonderful spiritual experiences, but the connection with the exquisitely fine Bliss Resonance remained elusive. Neither did I see evidence of that connection with the majority of the Monks that I lived with.

Meditation technique, when focused upon and held tightly to in “step-by-step” process, can create a barrier—however slight—that separates the meditator from the very fine nuances of how the Life Force (Spirit) in the body wishes to move/dance.

The practice of meditation technique does not necessarily lead to a wider energetic space within. The inner “resistance” created by strong attachments to beliefs and assumptions regarding meditation and spirituality builds a kind of force field or “wall” of noise that prevents us from hearing/feeling the subtle reverberations that move just below the surface of our familiar state of being.

Accessing the Unconscious, Part I

In the simple noticing and feeling into the overall sensation of Being, the mind can be understood to be like a machine or computer that can be programmed to move into deep trance states, where fine/subtle vibrations can be accessed.

This focus on subtlety has a way of drawing the mind deeply within. Using certain thoughts, prayers, songs, sounds, rhythm, etc., will put the mind into trance, where it is then fairly easy to observe the mind going on by itself, repeating the prayers over and over in the background of the mind.

In this kind of noticing, the overall sensation of the body/mind/psyche can be felt as “One Resonance of Being.” From this simple “noticing of Being,” there can also be an observing of thoughts percolating up from the unconscious. This is very subtle, as what comes up from the unconscious is, by definition, outside our normal waking consciousness.

How does our unconscious communicate with us? Oftentimes in dreams, through archetypes, through synchronicities, etc. Now, if you want more consistent access to the unconscious during times of meditation or when doing creative work, then the practice of tuning into, feeling into finer and finer nuances of sensations will help.

This can be done during periods of meditation or while at a coffee shop…or even standing in line at the market! At some point in the process of “observing,” there is a noticing of an inner resonance, a kind of background/underground vibration, that subtly moves the body into certain postures…and that ultimately “contorts” the body. This sensation of contortion also has a way of “gripping” the mind, holding the current of Life Force that draws the attention deeply within, upon “One Resonance of Being!”

Tuning Into the Subtlety of Sensations, Part VII

What is this feeling of “falling into a swoon” especially in relation to connecting with the subtlety of life force? An example of what happens when listening to and feeling  into music that touches us deeply can be useful here. I think most can relate to the experience of “losing” or “surrendering” oneself completely to music or dance. There can be a release of emotions and physical tensions, as well as a release of “thinking.”

If you “get” on a visceral level this feeling of “falling into a swoon” there is an opening here that can be explored. When listening and feeling into music that touches you deeply, notice how the body naturally “wants” to move and sway to its rhythm. However, it is during this period that, instead of getting up to dance or to move in larger ways, to gently hold back and to move in “micromovements” as a way to focus upon and build up the energies in the central core of the body.

Focus upon and feel into the very fine sensations that are activating the body to move and sway. Tune into the most subtle vibrations and experience the mind/body go into trance as it begins to feel the delicate waves and pulsations of Bliss.

The consciousness that apprehends these fine vibrations understands it to be the “Pearl of Great Price!” It is the essence of all sensations felt as One Resonance…and that essence is felt as a fine thread of vibrations connected with a most delicious and delicate sensation of sweetness, deep in the central core of what seems to be the spine.

This sweetness creates an energetic uplift of energy in the body, especially in the spine, holding the body/mind/psyche as though electrified…and the mind and thought processes are as though locked in place by the energetic current, which allows the “Observer” aspect of consciousness to experience little gaps of “no-thought,” the Divine Moment!

I think that it’s kind of ironic that, for me, Kundalini did not activate for me until having dropped my strong attachments to meditation techniques, as well as leaving an ashram that I lived as a monk for 19 years.

For me, releasing the strong “matrix” of spiritual community and “group think” created an inner feeling of “free-fall,” having nothing to stand on, or hold onto…which then offered me intimations of primal and chaotic sensations/energies moving through my body and psyche.

A few years after having left the ashram, I began singing, vocalizing in very unusual ways: throat singing (similar to Mongolian and Tibetan styles). Singing in this way came very quickly and easily for me. The subtleties of vocal overtones helped me to disconnect my thinking and any stories that would normally go round and round in my head (sadness, grief, etc.)

So many layers of density, of sadness and grief have had to be released/purged in the intervening years (since 2001). Kundalini, in the form of the Mother came to me in 2009. I felt/thought that she was extremely shy. She turned to me three times, without saying anything, beckoning me to follow her into my spine. I intuited immediately and felt her as Kundalini.

I’m glad that there is a mental concept/philosophy such as Kundalini. Otherwise, I might think that I was going a little (or maybe a lot) crazy. It gives my mind something to “chew” on in the sense that my mind seems to go ‘round and ‘round if it cannot make sense of something.

Kundalini, to me, is so far out there, wild, crazy, primal, maddening, blissful, that the mind seems to be right on the borderline of sanity and insanity! I now feel quite safe with Her in the sense of having learned to navigate very strange mental/physical/emotional/spiritual landscapes of Being. It still feels though like being in a world where veils are getting thinner and thinner.

With the onset of Kundalini there has also been times of simply ENDURING…during certain times when no amount of meditation, positive thinking, calling for help seems to ease physical/mental/spiritual suffering. Perhaps it does, but my meaning here is that there seems to be times when we get so “ground to dust” that we don’t have the wherewithal or even the memory to call for help, or shore ourselves up.

This is where Grace seems to come through. And this is my belief: that Kundalini comes with Grace. As blissful and ecstatic as Kundalini can be, it seems to also have a way of grounding us to dust, taking away all props, forcing us to our knees so-to-speak. At least that’s been my experience.

When it had been so, so dark, when I had forgotten myself and how to call for help, this is where Grace had stepped in, like the tiniest sliver of light (my lifeline) in a universe of darkness.

Kundalini, it all seems to be one large Cosmic Dance. Beautiful at times, grotesque at times…but a dance all the same, where we are being asked to let Her lead!

Nature, Is it Nice?

Nature in its sheer, raw, primal power doesn’t seem “nice” (at least from our “human” standpoint) and will chew us up and spit us out…if we were to not take care of ourselves and each other…and it could do so anyway, regardless of all the care and planning we might take to survive and be in balance here on Earth.

It seems that in the frequency range of our human consciousness, I know that I like to (and perhaps most of us like to) anthropomorphize Nature, to relate to and give this powerful force human attributes. Thus, Mother Earth, Divine Mother, Heavenly Father, etc..etc.

And Nature/Spirit/God seems to show up for us in the forms that best suits our temperament. At least that is how it has been for me.

Otherwise, it can get too overwhelming when faced with such suffering, of our own or of the collective. To me it sometimes seems that Nature can be painfully impersonal, especially when dealing with intense physical or emotional pain.

In the realm of my own humanity, where I can feel love, bliss, sadness, pain, etc., It gives me great comfort to be able to relate to Nature from my own humanness, regardless of how much suffering can occur in Nature and how “inhuman” and even “cruel” Nature might seem to be.

However, I don’t think Nature is outside the bandwidth of our humanness. We love, hate, feel sadness, bliss…because it is in our “Nature” to do so…and from this perspective Nature can seem to be incredibly personal…and also very much like a great story that gives meaning to our world.

Does our story of Nature help us grow spiritually, or is it cause for contraction?

Dance of Well Being, Part 2

Focusing the mind upon subtle body sensations can be a way of quieting the mind, an easy way of focusing the attention. When placing the mind upon the overall resonance of sensations, the feelings can be resolved into a kind of “ball of vibration” that can be squeezed, pushed and pulled through the body, that effortlessly attracts the attention and focuses the mind.

This is experienced as a delicate dance of exquisite sensations balanced upon the pinpoint of the mind’s attention.

What holds the attention? Bliss…

What is meant by the “ball of vibration?” It is the sum total, the overall resonance of all that is felt in the moment. Sensations include all vibrations coming in through the physical senses and may include smells, tastes, sounds, sights, etc.

The main ingredient here is in connecting with the underlying sensation that has a “feel good” aspect and that imparts a feeling of well being. This particular vibratory “ingredient” is the secret sauce without which the above is just another technique that cannot take you very deep.

The very feeling/sensation of well being, of bliss, is the prompt that can take you to deepest levels of the awareness of Being!

We Are Meant to Dance, Part 5

On the dance floor, the most intricate and delicate nuances of movements and postures can be explored to infinite depths. In the context of connecting with the Bliss Resonance in the spine, “micromovements” are ways to magnify and hold these ecstatic sensations. And these sensations have corresponding states of mind/consciousness that can also be explored/experienced.

What does this all mean? Very simply, while “grooving” with music you love dancing to, by allowing yourself to deeply feel and follow the activating sensations that make you want to move/dance, the sensations begin to increase in their intensity.

The very act of allowing and feeling these fine sensations magnifies the bliss response in the body. The experience of the increasing bliss resonance then has a way of “grabbing” the mind, holding it in the “geometry” of the sensation itself. I use the word “geometry” in the meaning that the body takes up (on its own) a posture or form…geometry! The energy moving through the body can “feel” circular, triangular, spiral-ish, etc.

The feel and play of “micromovements” are like dancing with silken threads of sensations that can be spun outwards to infinity. Imagine your arms, hands and fingers connected with these filaments of rainbow lights that are connected with the bliss resonance in the spine. It is in the feeling connection with bliss that gives meaning to this visualization. Imagination or visualization by itself (at least for me) is not strong enough to create the somatic experience of bliss. First comes the experience and then the visualization or imagination is created and given meaning.

We Are Meant to Dance, Part 4

For anyone who loves to dance, they usually know what kind of music gets their juices flowing. Their bodies seem to move on their own, in resonance with what they hear and feel!

We are music loving, dance loving creations! When we tune into the fine sensation that is activated inside of us upon listening to our favorite music, a doorway is opened to experience that “Aha! There it is (the ecstatic vibration)!” moment with the Bliss Resonance.

That “Aha!” moment represents a conscious connection with the very fine, microscopic thread of the Bliss sensation that can be pulled and followed to exquisitely deep and luxurious feelings in the body and especially the spine.

In this connection with the Bliss Resonance, the sensation in the body is like the finest silken thread being pulled through the spine. This is the thread that the archetype of “Spider Woman” uses to weave the very fabric of creation! Her needles move at the speed of Now to create all things!

I write these accounts with the hope that—to those of you who have followed this “thread” of “We Are Meant to Dance” thus far, that it may awaken your apprehension of this very fine energetic thread moving through the spine and limbs and that you have the somatic experience of which I speak.

In this experience the body is as a lightning rod so to speak, electrified by the ecstatic current moving through the field of the body. For those who resonate with these words, with the space that I speak from, understand that you are a mere hairbreadth away from that “Aha!” recognition of the sublime Bliss Resonance!

We Are Meant to Dance!

The human body is such an amazing creation! We were made to dance, to move in rhythm with the heartbeat of Nature, with the music we love…because it feels so freakin’ good to do so!

My recent mix of favorite artists: Sarah Tavares, Adriana Calcanhotto, Habib Koite, Fatoumata Diawara and Marisa Monte, to me when I listen and feel their music, the vibrations/overtones/resonance of their voices have a way of “squeezing” the “feel good” juices as though through every cell of my body.

Have you ever heard someone express someone’s artistry of voice as being “So beautiful that it hurts?” So beautiful that we cry? Scream? The above mentioned artists do that for me.

Children have such an abundance of physical energy that they usually have a natural ease and grace with dancing. Their expression of movement through dance comes as a joyful overflow of energy…if the natural connection with their bodies hasn’t been shamed or censored out of them.

As we grow older, our dancing becomes more structured. We want to learn dance moves, styles, etc. It is safer to dance in ways that are within acceptable boundaries and styles. On dance floors. In the safe container of other dancers.

I admire people who feel free enough to dance at bus stops, on the street, at the workplace, with or without music…just for the joy of dancing!

Until that day comes when I feel that kind of freedom, I have a way to play/dance with the feel good juices of music, whether sitting, standing or laying down. It starts with feeling for that delicate, activating, blissful sensation in the body that wants to move to the rhythms of the music being listened to. As you follow the sensations, pay attention to how the energy wants to move, how it wants to position the body in ways that magnifies the sensation. This is the point at which the palate of sensations expands dramatically. The inner dance becomes like a gigantic smile or giggle moving ecstatically through the spine and body!
