The vocal cords can be thought of as similar to the strings of a violin. Using breath to vibrate the vocal cords to make sound is then similar to using the violin bow to vibrate its strings to make sound.
Our bodies, like the body of the violin, vibrates in resonance to the sounds created by the vocal cords…and these sounds, when tuned into, can be felt throughout the body in sublime subtlety.
In following the trail of subtle vibrations within, there is a meeting point of physical vibration with the wider reverberations of all sensations felt as one resonance…and the overall sensation has a fine thread or string of sweetness embedded within it.
This sensation of sweetness is at first like a vibration as soft as a whisper, but when followed/tracked to finer and finer subtlety, the body knows intuitively how to move/dance in ways that squeezes the sweetness, like nectar, through the spine and all cells of the body.
As you continue to relax and feel into the subtle vibrations in the palms (that were started by clapping the hands together, see Part II), you might begin to feel the overall sensation of the body…and ultimately the Hum or Om Vibration. By tuning the mind inwardly on the subtle vibrations, it begins to apprehend its connection with the underlying Hum of all vibrations…felt as One Resonance!
The vocalized sound of Om is a representation of this “One Resonance.” Embedded in this resonance is a sweetness that can be tuned into while toning (or chanting) Om. The vocalizing of Om can be thought of as getting the motor of the body and especially the spinal currents running.
Just like in clapping the hands, the vibrations started in the vocal cords can be—through resonance—felt throughout the body, especially the nasal cavities, lower abdomen, heart area, spine, etc.
The sweetness of the Bliss vibration has a particular resonance that can be tuned into. Like tuning the guitar, or any instrument, the body/mind/psyche can be tuned to the Resonance of Bliss!
Sound creates a resonant field of vibration. Vibration creates sensations in the body…which draws the mind inwards…and the inward focus on sensation connects the mind to the subtle underlying “Hum” of the overall vibration of all sensations felt together, the overall experience of Being!
Sounds, as created by our vocal cords, creates resonant field of vibrations that can be felt as sensations in the body…some that are extremely subtle and yet exquisitely sublime. Using the voice to initiate these fine sensations is a most amazing gift that very few understand or make use of.
For example, there are certain “overtones” of vocal sounds that have a way, through resonance, of opening a deep attunement and awareness of the pineal gland/crown area. Again, sound creates vibration, which creates sensation, which draws inwardly the mind.
These vocal sounds vibrate the nasal cavity and crown areas, which draws the awareness to those areas. By feeling into the subtle vibrations there, the mind is interiorized. The particular sound and overtone is a very nasally “nng” sound.
In playing with this particular sound, all thoughts and judgments about how it sounds (good, bad, ugly, beautiful, etc.) must be let go of. This particular way of vocalizing is not so much about singing as it is about creating certain overtones and vibrations that open/expand areas of the body (spine, brain, etc.) which then tunes our mind/body/awareness to very fine and subtle waves and undulations of the “Life Force,” the “Hum/Om” of Creation.
Part I of “Kundalini Dance of Subtlety” can be accessed here
I think that it’s kind of ironic that, for me, Kundalini did not activate for me until having dropped my strong attachments to meditation techniques, as well as leaving an ashram that I lived as a monk for 19 years.
For me, releasing the strong “matrix” of spiritual community and “group think” created an inner feeling of “free-fall,” having nothing to stand on, or hold onto…which then offered me intimations of primal and chaotic sensations/energies moving through my body and psyche.
A few years after having left the ashram, I began singing, vocalizing in very unusual ways: throat singing (similar to Mongolian and Tibetan styles). Singing in this way came very quickly and easily for me. The subtleties of vocal overtones helped me to disconnect my thinking and any stories that would normally go round and round in my head (sadness, grief, etc.)
So many layers of density, of sadness and grief have had to be released/purged in the intervening years (since 2001). Kundalini, in the form of the Mother came to me in 2009. I felt/thought that she was extremely shy. She turned to me three times, without saying anything, beckoning me to follow her into my spine. I intuited immediately and felt her as Kundalini.
I’m glad that there is a mental concept/philosophy such as Kundalini. Otherwise, I might think that I was going a little (or maybe a lot) crazy. It gives my mind something to “chew” on in the sense that my mind seems to go ‘round and ‘round if it cannot make sense of something.
Kundalini, to me, is so far out there, wild, crazy, primal, maddening, blissful, that the mind seems to be right on the borderline of sanity and insanity! I now feel quite safe with Her in the sense of having learned to navigate very strange mental/physical/emotional/spiritual landscapes of Being. It still feels though like being in a world where veils are getting thinner and thinner.
With the onset of Kundalini there has also been times of simply ENDURING…during certain times when no amount of meditation, positive thinking, calling for help seems to ease physical/mental/spiritual suffering. Perhaps it does, but my meaning here is that there seems to be times when we get so “ground to dust” that we don’t have the wherewithal or even the memory to call for help, or shore ourselves up.
This is where Grace seems to come through. And this is my belief: that Kundalini comes with Grace. As blissful and ecstatic as Kundalini can be, it seems to also have a way of grounding us to dust, taking away all props, forcing us to our knees so-to-speak. At least that’s been my experience.
When it had been so, so dark, when I had forgotten myself and how to call for help, this is where Grace had stepped in, like the tiniest sliver of light (my lifeline) in a universe of darkness.
Kundalini, it all seems to be one large Cosmic Dance. Beautiful at times, grotesque at times…but a dance all the same, where we are being asked to let Her lead!
I seek to connect with those who, like me, feel they have been “charged” to hold and ground the Bliss Resonance for Mother Earth. Please contact me if you’d like to experience the ecstatic current in the spine. It is a free session that will be of great benefit for you whether we decide to work together or not. Contact me here if you’d like to: Connect With the Bliss Resonance
I will get back to you but please be sure to check your filtered mail as my email may get placed in your junk mailbox.
I like to think of certain emotions as being “harmonics” or “overtones” of the fundamental vibration of Love. For example, the feelings of gratitude and joy can be thought of as overtones or harmonics of Love.
Just as in singing, the overtones or “partials” have a direct correlation to the fundamental note being sung. They seem to hover above the dominant note.
Merriam Webster defines the word overtone (in its musical connotation):
one of the higher tones produced simultaneously with the fundamental and that with the fundamental comprise a complex musical tone
And Webster’s simple definition:
an idea or quality that is suggested without being said directly
If we tune into the frequency or fundamental vibration of Love, the overtones of Love would be gratitude, joy, etc. Can you see where I’m going with this?
I believe that the power in mantras (sacred sanskrit prayers) are in the overtones. In overtone singing (or throat singing), the overtones or harmonics seem to float over the fundamental note being sung. They sound ethereal…and the effects can be felt in the body, ranging from relaxing to ecstatic.
The fine vibrations of the overtones seem to create “suggestions” or “echoes” of sensations, exquisitely felt in the spine and in the body as Bliss.
If you’d like to experience (and feel) the power of vocal overtones for yourselves, I have some free lessons that I offer to get you started. All it takes is a childlike willingness to play, along with an openness to deeply feel. The free lessons can be found here.
The following techniques are guidelines to help you get the feel and sound of the high, medium and low register overtones. Once you are familiar with the sounds and comfortable in creating the overtones, you will discover your own techniques and unique sounds to explore. These techniques should in no way strain the vocal cords. In fact, the quality of the voice and breathing capacity should improve with practice. Have fun with the techniques! Remember, no forcing or straining. The overtones come when you are deeply relaxed!
Higher Register: the harmonics sound similar to high whistling.
Tip of tongue behind the upper front teeth
Make small movements with the lips and tongue to get the overtones vibrating.
EE as in “year”
Listen especially during the transition between the “y” to “ee” sound, and then from “ee” to “rr” sounds.
The listening part is most important. Take note of how the sound changes with very slight movements in tongue position. Experiment with volume (low to high). The EE sound corresponds to the spiritual eye and crown centers. Pay attention to these areas as you practice.
It is also important to note that you are already creating harmonics with your voice. This is what makes your voice unique. The techniques you are learning are just ways to tune into and magnify certain notes or “partials.”
Mid Register: the harmonics sound like ethereal flutes.
OH as in OM
Lips slightly round and tongue flat on bottom of mouth and slightly pulled towards back of throat. Visualize small grapefruit expanding the space in the mouth. The sound of OH corresponds to the root chakra (at base of spine), giving a sense of grounding and connection with Earth energies.
UU as in “you.”
With slightly round lips, sing UU and then move the tongue slightly and slowly forward. Listen to the changes in harmonics. Repeat. Again, experiment with volume. The sound of UU corresponds to the throat area, the seat of creativity and expression.
Lower Register: The harmonics sound guttural (similar to Tibetan Buddhist chanting). The lower register can also sound like low notes of a flute or like someone blowing sideways on the opening of a bottle. The harmonics are produced in the back of the throat in general but can also be produced throughout the mouth with practice.
OH as in “OM”
Relax the throat and open up the back of the throat and nasal passages. As you tone the sound of “OH” create a cavity in the mouth (visualize the grapefruit) and push air out through the mouth and nasal passage. This takes a bit of practice. Experiment with going back and forth with pushing air out mostly through the mouth and then a combination of through the mouth and nose.
Sound of motor: with lips closed (no air going through), make the sound of a motor (kind of like a sawing sound) high in the nasal cavities. When you get this sound, try opening the mouth to add overtones from the expanded space.
In practicing the upper, middle and lower range harmonics, keeping the nasal passages open and allowing some air and vibration to pass through this area is a great help in producing the harmonics. In the beginning, however, it may not feel natural and so to get a feel for this, practice with mouth closed for a little while. Hum through the nose and listen to each of the aforementioned sounds.
With time and practice you will learn to hear a wide range of harmonics and will begin to project greater energy in sounding out different overtones at the same time. You will then be able to create your own unique combinations of overtones that will help you towards a greater sense of well being and balance.
Have fun with your practice and let me know how you are coming along.
I would like to share with you something that has been extremely helpful in the creative work that I now do. A number of you have asked how I came to embrace the path of art and sound healing. This post is about finding your way to your “Heart’s Virtue,” (also known as the unique gifts you were meant to manifest and express in life).
Eight years ago, while still in the monastery and struggling with thoughts of leaving, I had no idea what my heart was calling me to do. I was in a “no-mans’ land” of ambivalence–feeling stuck. In other words, I felt paralyzed, not able to move forward and unable to embrace the life that I had been living for close to 20 years.
Fortunately for me, in 2001 I began working with someone who became a coach and mentor to me. His name is Greg Mooers, founder of LifeCamp. He was a friend and fellow monk who left the monastery some years earlier and developed a successful career in coaching that pinpointed and clarified the “Heart Virtue” of one’s unique calling in life.
In my experience with Greg and the process that we went through, I connected viscerally with my heart and received clarity for the first time regarding the gifts that I was born to express in life.
I opened up to my “Heart Virtue” of “Creativity” and “Sacred Space.” It was a powerful awakening that had me gasping, “How is it that I did not recognize this until now!” When the heart opens up, it moves tremendous amounts of energy that reveals with clarity the gifts that you were born to express in life.
My Heart Virtue of Creativity and Sacred Space is the “gasoline” that fuels all of my endeavors in life. That is my commitment to myself and to all of you. It is what moves through me with greater and greater momentum as I learn to step out of the way and allow it to flow unimpeded.
As Greg’s work has been of such value to me and the work that I now do, I wanted to share this information with you. If you are seeking clarity about your most treasured desires in life, or if you wish to connect with what your heart is calling you to do (your Heart Virtue), then by all means check out Greg’s programs.

This post describes the power of the human voice when used as a way to alter mental frequencies for accessing the deepest dream states and to also change for the better any difficult circumstance of our lives. We can use the human voice as “Divine Frequency Modulator” to help us gain conscious entrance to dream states and to also shift the awareness to higher planes or dimensions.
The mind is habituated to certain frequencies or vibrations that it has become accustomed to. The whole experience of life lies within a certain range of resonances, and these make up the spectrum of what you relate to in life. As you learn to slow thoughts down, your frequency changes, allowing for experiences beyond the normal range of perceptions.
Nightly dreams are generated from these slower frequencies. The dream states can be accessed consciously during sleep when you maintain awareness during the transition period between states. The usual habit is to fall asleep as you approach the subconscious realms. With practice, you can learn to maintain awareness as you drift into the land of dreams. It is a matter of tuning into and feeling the frequencies of sleep with awareness.
When you begin to understand the dreamlike nature of the waking state, you will begin to understand yourself connected with a vastly wide consciousness that is dreaming a dream of life through you. Feel and listen now on the inside. Watch and observe; drop into the field of the wider consciousness that is all around you–everywhere.
As you relax and release attachments to thoughts, you will find the energy moving of itself, expressing in ways that does not require any type of thought process that you are familiar with. Immerse now into the flow of the Creative River. It is strong and moves easily and effortlessly. Observe dispassionately. As you do so, the creative voice that wishes to express will find easy manifestation through a heart that is open to the ebb and flow of the cosmic dream.
Step out of the way! As you relax and go into the deeper states of trance, you will find the energy of your Higher Self stepping into your field of consciousness. Allow this to naturally unfold as you observe within. Take note of the different states of consciousness, from wakefulness to the deepest levels of sleep and unconsciousness.
When you fall asleep at night you are in effect entering a different realm of consciousness, a different frequency of awareness. When you awaken you return again to the dimension and frequency of awareness that includes body consciousness and a certain type of mindset and belief system regarding personal identity and spacial location.
The body and world has a resonant frequency that you vibrate along with; and it can sometimes be difficult to change the patterns (your circumstances) even if you wish and pray to do so! The world of vibration has a way of tuning everything around it to its own rate of frequency: a noisy, discordant office with artificial light and little air circulation has very well-known negative effects on body and mind… and yet the mind does have power to change the frequency of the environment through the use of things that are also in the environment. Certain types of music can energize or relax; the sounds of nature such as waterfalls, waves, bird sounds, etc. can have the same effects. The use of drums and rattles can induce deeply hypnogogic states that can open the mind to conscious dreaming.
There is also the human voice which has the range and power to deeply affect the environment and circumstances when used with the twin stallions of emotion and conviction. What gives words power? Vibration! And especially vibrations backed by calm feelings that are connected with the cosmic energy of Divine Love!
If the world weighs heavily upon you, it is because the combined frequencies of fear and hate have created a vibratory quicksand that keeps you trapped and unable to move, caught in hypnotic spell of confusion and inertia. And yet the human voice has the power to shatter any spell or fetter of mind, and can change the environment when used in its role as “Divine Frequency Modulator.” Through its connection with the Divine Source the voice can move mountains of difficulties and change the course of lives!
Explore the power of the voice by first intoning words of Truth with deepest feeling and conviction. Elongate the words, especially the vowel sounds and then listen and feel as the mind enters the deepest states of calm attention. Go deeper still and connect feeling, vibration and words with the Cosmic Source.
One way of getting into the moment and dropping all regrets and resentments is by using sound. The video is of me playing the digeridoo (an ancient Australian Aboriginal instrument). The harmonics created and the use of “circular breathing” helps to connect with the Earth Mother and the spirits of Nature. The following post is from a dialog with Higher Self regarding the power of the mind…
Drop all regrets and resentments by focusing strongly upon what you are feeling in the moment, whether fear, sadness, or resentment. Immerse yourself in the consciousness of now, in the fullness of what vibrates within. Drop all anxiety! It is a repeating loop of agitation brought on by thoughts and memories of past hurts that threaten future suffering. Get out of the recurring time loop that keeps you captive on the roller coaster ride of fear!
For now, throw away the need to “make sense” of the world. It will only cause frustration. Too many stories and beliefs have already been erected around “Life and all of its mysteries.” Focus on this thought: Build the magnet! Build the attracting force that will create the dimensions you wish to manifest. The magnet is created by powerfully revolving the thoughts and feelings around the objects of your noble desires… IN THE MOMENT! The vibratory field created will then be a living energy grid that cannot be impinged upon by anxieties of the past or worries about the future.
Use the mind as the creative instrument it was intended to be, not the instrument of torture that it has become. The mind was not intended to constantly churn out stories and memories of past hurts. With the mind, you can tap into the deepest layers of any mystery. Layer upon layer can be pulled aside to uncover the infinite subtleties of existence.
With mind you can create anything, any circumstance. At present you believe yourself subject to certain laws and restrictions of the world. You have bought into the mass hypnosis that the billions on earth are subject to. Awaken now to the gifts that are yours. The connection you have with your surroundings are not only through the body, as consciousness is not limited by the physical senses. The senses are merely filters that show certain spectrums of the Infinite Consciousness. And the power of the senses need not be limited as the consciousness of any filter can be ramped up to apprehend the finest nuances of the physical and spiritual universes.
Let the mind do the work it is meant to do. There are no limitations save in your own unwillingness to venture beyond the pale of the senses. Let yourself flow with the power as you allow the channels of body and mind to merge with the Universal Currents.
We understand that it is difficult to go against the tide of the worldly dream…suffering and pain is all so real to those who live in the realms of the earthly nightmare. It doesn’t go away by just wishing or hoping. And yet the dream has many layers, dimensions that can be unfolded to reveal all the lessons contained. Use the vibration of your focus combined with your voice to change the dream. With the use of harmonics you can melt the boundaries that separate you from the path you are meant to walk.
All things have the vibration of song. Melt into the creative stream that flows to the ocean where the symphony of all sounds merge. Your worries and thoughts of limitation are part of the dream that you can awaken from when you choose to receive the vibration of your Life’s Song. There is only the moment, and hidden within the moment is the power of your song that can shatter the phantoms of the nightmare.
Your dream of limitation and worry can be instantly changed when you choose to awaken. Does it seem too simple that we ask you to live only in the moment? Through habit the mind seems to have been hardwired to stay within the narrow band of “reality” that it has grown comfortable with, and anything beyond this zone it cannot or will not venture. And yet there are dimensions far beyond what you can now imagine.
The reality you now find yourself locked into is narrow and enduring because it is what the mind has come to accept and allow. It has settled for a small corner of the infinite Universe. There is so much more that can be explored. It is just a matter of shifting consciousness to the awareness of Now; and in the consciousness of Now, there is no attachment to past and future, no attachment to worries and fears. There is only the awareness of what is. It is a deep letting go, a deep relaxation of all attachments to mind and mind stuff. The moment allows space for a wider experience of all that is.
Using Sound and Vocal Harmonics
Until you relax the tentacles of mind that holds your reality in constant form, it is difficult to experience the consciousness beyond the veils of the world. Continue to use sound and vocal harmonics to shake the foundations of the limited corner you now find yourself locked within. Consciousness is powerful enough to not only keep the Universe in form but it can also reshape and reorder all things. Continue to use the vibration of vocal harmonics to enter the deepest states of awareness.
Explore the depths of this very moment! It contains the power of all creation! There is no other place to experience what you seek. It is all within you this very moment. Nothing can be added or taken away. Use the vibration of your Life’s Song to explore dimensions now hidden behind the hard shell of dense beliefs that the world has imposed upon you for incarnations! Ride upon the wave of harmonics to plumb the depths of your Souls’ longing for freedom!
